Brain cells are vulnerable to oxidative stress, which damages DNA and proteins and could contribute to cognitive decline and dementia. The brain has some natural defenses against oxidative damage, including an antioxidant called glutathione. New research from the University of Kansas suggests that drinking milk or consuming other dairy products can raise brain levels of glutathione and may protect the brain from oxidative damage.
Our bodies make glutathione using cysteine, a precursor molecule. And milk and other dairy products are rich in cysteine. Additional sources include cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, leafy greens, and whey protein. So if a glass of milk isn't your cup of tea, you've got some options that may boost your brain's natural antioxidant system.
