Effect of candesartan on prodromal Alzheimer's Disease and its related biomarkers
Changes in the blood vessels contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) onset and progression. Candesartan, a blood pressure medication, also can affect many aspects of (AD). We showed in animal models of AD and in autopsy studies that use of this class of medication has a positive effect on AD-related changes in the brain. We are now proposing to test if candesartan may decrease both brain changes as well as cognitive symptoms of AD. We plan to recruit 40 individuals from Emory Memory Disorder Clinic and randomize them to either Candesartan or Placebo. We will assess the safety of using candesartan in those without hypertension, measure its blood pressure effects, and evaluate the memory and related cognitive function response of candesartan as well as the brain changes that occur over the one year of treatment with candesartan.
