Donald Newhouse Honored for His Efforts to End a Rare Form of Dementia

On Monday, November 14, Donald Newhouse received The Charles Evans Award from the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) at our Seventh Annual Fall Symposium & Luncheon "Hope on the Horizon" at The Pierre in New York City. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Symposium & Luncheon raised nearly $1 million. All proceeds support the ADDF's mission to accelerate the development of drugs to prevent, treat, and cure Alzheimer's and related dementias.
ADDF Co-Founder and Co-Chairman Ronald S. Lauder welcomed guests to the Luncheon and said: "We're closer than ever to having effective drugs for these diseases. And for those of us whose families have been affected by Alzheimer's or another dementia, those drugs can’t come soon enough."
During the Luncheon, Leonard A. Lauder presented the Charles Evans Award to Donald Newhouse for his support of dementia research and the Treat FTD Fund. Mr. Newhouse told the audience that both his late wife, Suzy, and his brother, Si, were affected by frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), a rare form of dementia. Of his philanthropic efforts, he said: "I realized that the only way we could make sense of this twin tragedy—the way Sue and Si would want—was to commit ourselves to find a cure, treatment, and prevention for this horrendous dementia."
The morning Symposium, "Advancing New Treatments for Dementia," was led by the ADDF’s Executive Director Howard Fillit and featured a panel of leading international scientists. Sandra Black from the University of Toronto, Carlos Buesa of Oryzon Genomics in Barcelona, Michela Gallagher from Johns Hopkins University, and Edward D. Huey of Columbia University shared their efforts to develop effective drugs for Alzheimer's and related dementias with the riveted audience. All four are now testing drugs in human clinical trials, the final stages before a drug is approved for use by patients.
