The Aging & Alzheimer’s Prevention Program

Our mission is to evaluate, communicate, and accelerate the development of scientific evidence
for proposed strategies to prevent brain aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and related dementias.

What We Do in the Aging & Alzheimer's Prevention Program

1. We Evaluate the Science of Prevention Therapies

ADDF scientists have evaluated the scientific evidence for and against over 100 suggested therapies to prevent brain aging or dementia. The therapies include drugs still in development, FDA-approved drugs, vitamins, nutrients, foods, supplements, herbal medicines and other approaches.

ADDF scientists are writing peer-reviewed scientific articles that evaluate what's known and what's unknown about potential prevention therapies. For example:

2. We Communicate the Science of Prevention Therapies

Can fish oil lower your risk of dementia or slow brain aging? What about antioxidants, herbal medicines, vitamins, supplements, or the clinical treatment of diabetes, hypertension and menopausal symptoms? What about exercise or other lifestyle choices?

Testing these approaches for dementia prevention takes a long time, often decades. But for many of these approaches substantial scientific evidence, while incomplete, is available now to guide our choices. We believe individuals deserve access to current scientific evidence in order to make the most informed decisions for nutrition, supplements, management of disease and lifestyle choices. With this website, the Aging & Alzheimer's Prevention Program seeks to provide clear and credible summaries of the available evidence to help you decide what's best for you and your brain.

This website provides

  • Ratings of the evidence for safety and efficacy of suggested prevention therapies
  • Detailed summaries of the most promising prevention therapies
  • Discussion of available sources of suggested prevention therapies
  • Guidelines for interpreting scientific research
  • Content developed by ADDF scientists funded by an anonymous donor, with no conflict of interest with commercial entities selling any reviewed product

This website does NOT provide

  • Recommendations or endorsements of suggested prevention therapies, whether diet, drug, supplement, or other

3. We Accelerate the Science of Prevention Therapies

The Aging & Alzheimer's Prevention Program works to accelerate the development of strong scientific evidence for practical strategies to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

  • We organize advisory panels to develop solutions to the challenges that slow prevention therapy development
    • We held an international advisory panel on Alzheimer's Prevention: Improving the translation of diverse and incomplete scientific evidence. Outcomes of the panel included
      • An editorial with JAMA Neurology entitled "Evidence Needs to be translated, whether or not it is complete" (doi: 10.1001/jamaneurol.2013.5376),
      • An invited article on the role of observational research in personal, clinical, and public health decision-making, under review at Alzheimer's & Dementia
      • A Task Force with the Global Aging Research Network with the International Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology
      • New funding strategies for the Aging & Alzheimer's Prevention Program
  • We fund high-risk catalytic research. The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation is the largest private funder of Alzheimer's drug discovery in the world, with $60 million invested in over 400 drug research programs worldwide. Within this context, the Aging & Alzheimer's Prevention Program has developed funding priorities priorities to speed up the gathering of high-quality evidence for possible prevention therapies that are available today.
  • We highlight aging biology, central to promising therapies to treat and prevent Alzheimer's.
